Bo Burnham: Inside

I came across Bo Burnham: Inside after watching a recommendation for it on TikTok, and I have to say I’m glad I watched. If I may also add this is the first comedy special I have ever watched. Bo Burnham: Inside was a refreshing step away from my usual streaming entertainment. I went in not knowing what to expect and I’m glad to make this my intro to Bo Burnham. I highly enjoyed Bo adding music and comedy mixed with serious topics. Bo Burnham proves to be an incredible performer without the need of an audience.

The entire special takes place in one room in Bo Burnham’s home over the course of a year. The special jumps all over the place to the next song or skit to the next, in a chaotically beautiful way. Every now and then the special will have these little moments of Bo setting up lights or writing a song, and throughout Bo will stop to talk about the process of making the special the longer he continues to work.

Bo Burnham did an excellent job giving each skit or song their own moment again adding to the chaos that just works. Every second was entertaining even the tamer or serious parts. The special ends with Bo finally emerging out of the inside and into the outside or really a stage with an off screen audience as he tries to go back inside.

Bo Burnham: Inside was funny, entertaining, with moments of seriousness, had funny songs, and great lighting. It was not your average comedy special, that is usually filmed in a theater with a live audience, and the whole thing just works.

For Bo Burnham, the pandemic and staying inside for over a year did something productive that is entertaining for us viewers and probably therapeutic for him and maybe others.
