CODA: Review
CODA (Child of Deaf Adults) is a coming-of-age drama/ comedy about Ruby, a hearing girl born in a deaf family. Ruby must choose between her family obligations and her dream of singing and going to college.
I found CODA to be refreshing in terms as it was filled with hope, a feel-good wholesome film that offers real life situations that average families, whether deaf or not, face everyday and showed how sometimes following your own path might not be easy when your family depends on you for a lot of everyday tasks.
When Ruby’s final performance where she signed the lyrics so her family could understand was moving to say the least. CODA reminds us that we shouldn’t stick to someone else’s path and to follow our own even if it’s not easy. I even got a little teary eyed as the final moments of the film played. We should expect some sort of awards recognition for CODA. Emilia Jones who plays Ruby, who doesn’t have a mass filmography, will most likely draw the most attention from award committees.
