The Apple TV+ original series Ted Lasso, first appearing in NBC Sports promos for Premier League coverage, returns for season two on July 23rd, and I watched the first season to catch you up before the season two premiere.
The series stars Jason Sudeikis in the title role of Ted Lasso, which won him the Golden Globe for best actor in a comedy series. The series also stars Hannah Waddingham as Rebecca Welton the new owner of AFC Richmond with a secret agenda, Jeremy Swift as Higgins who is Rebecca’s unwilling helper in her scheme, Phil Dunster as Jamie Tartt the rising star with the douchebag complex, Brett Goldstein as Roy Kent the team captain and aging star, Brendan Hunt as Coach Beard who is Ted’s assistant and longtime friend, Nick Mohammed as Nathan Shelley the kit-man who becomes an assistant coach and Juno Temple as Keeley Jones a model who used to date Jamie now is dating Roy and works for the team.
Ted Lasso follows Ted Lasso, an American Football coach, who is unexpectedly hired to coach an English Premier League football (soccer) team. He has the impossible task of keeping AFC Richmond from getting relegated to the English Football League Championship, which is the second division league, while trying to win over his players and the passionate, colorfully language fans. All while unknowingly getting sabotaged by the club’s new owner, who is using her new power just to get back at her ex-husband.
As Ted Lasso tries to navigate this unfamiliar territory. He has to deal with a team that does not like him, extremely passionate fans with their “warm” welcoming of Ted, clashing egos in the locker room, and dealing with personal problems.
Season one ended with an inevitable outcome with AFC Richmond almost keeping to the draw to stay in the Premier League but losing 2-1 to Manchester City causing them to be relegated to EFLChampionship. I want to see season two as a comeback story for the team and Ted Lasso. Having AFC Richmond able to scale to the top of the EFL Championship leaderboard and reclaiming their spot in the Premier League.
I am curious to see where the character Jamie Tartt will go from where we left him. Jamie is no longer a part of AFC Richmond after being called back by Manchester United, so I wonder how big his role will be. I hope we get a better deep dive into his life; we got a glimpse but right before going back to Man City, then he returned to his cocky ways. With how the first season ended with Roy it hinted that the final match looked to be his last. So, will we see Roy adjusting to retirement, enjoying his new relationship with Keeley, or will he say fuck retirement I’m not giving up yet.
We are for sure to see Ted settle better in his role as coach. Hopefully should also be seeing Ted Lasso adjust more to the divorced life, maybe get a love interest too.
We will also be getting a new character named Sharon played by Sarah Niles. Not much is known about her character except that she is a sports psychologist.
Ted Lasso is a binge-worthy show that will have you laughing one moment then pulling at the heartstrings in the next. So, if you have not caught up now is the time to do so.
You can watch Ted Lasso on Apple TV+ all episodes of season 1 streaming now and make sure to catch season 2 when it premieres on July 23rd
