KATE: Review
Mary Elizabeth Winstead plays Kate, an assassin, who after her last mission finds out that she’s been poisoned with only 24 hours to live. Kate then spends her last hours getting revenge against the one who poisoned her.
John Wick meets Die Hard. A high powered adrenaline rush of a film. Kate delivers with high stakes with eye-catching visuals and killer fight choreography with just enough blood bullets to the head, some occasional humor all while having heart. Add in a car scene that makes me miss the good old days of the early years of the Fast and Furious movies. Mary Elizabeth Winstead shows off her action skills even further. Woody Harrelson in the supporting role as Kate’s handler, a smaller yet crucial part of the plot and newcomer Miku Martineau playing opposite Mary Elizabeth, breaks through the dying Kate’s barriers making Kate more sympathetic.
As the film progresses with Kate and Miku’s character Ani you get a big sister little sister relationship slowly developing as Ani goes from bait to ally all in the course of 24 hours. In the third act of the film there is a somewhat cliche plot twist that you either see coming or might not see coming but doesn’t feel forced. Kate works as a great one off action film with a sad yet satisfying ending.
