DANGER, DANGER SPOILER WARNING AHEAD!
The first episode of the final season of The Walking Dead begins with Maggie, Carol, Rosita, Kelly, and others being lowered down into what seems to be a Walker-filled military base in search of food. Bags of MREs get lifted by Daryl and others from the roof. A rope breaks, almost losing the bag and alerting the walkers, but Daryl is able to catch it, only for his arm to bleed onto a walker and alerts the rest to wake. Carol and the rest must fight through the walkers as they wait for ropes to be dropped so they can be lifted. Carol, the last one still on the ground spots a crate of MREs, bagging those, with a little assistance from Dayle above, before returning to the rope and getting out safely.
Once they return to Alexandria, Maggie is reunited with more of her people. The food they collected is revealed to only be enough for a week. So, Maggie suggests they take back the settlement called Meridian she and her people were before as it was taken by the Reapers. Daryl and Gabriel are the only ones to Volunteer to go aside from Maggie’s people. They along with a few others from Alexandria including Negan make their way to Meridian through a bad storm on foot.
They make their way into an old subway station to escape the storm opting to use the subway system to get passed to their destination. Negan points out how this is a bad idea due to the water marks on the walls indicating the tunnel floods often, and how they don’t even know if there is an exit. They come across seemingly dead bodies in bags. The bodies revealed are not “dead” as one starts to get up. As they make their way further into the tunnel taking out every walker as they push on. A huge muscular walker gets up, almost killing a boy named Gage, but Negan saves him in time. Negan suggests they go back and calls out Maggie for acting like a dictator, he would know so, and that he knows that Negan being there is merely a death sentence for him. Maggie gets her chance to end him right there but doesn’t.
The group come across a train cart just as a horde begins to approach from behind. They try to get the train cart open but with no luck, so they must climb to the top. Daryl leaves the group to go after Dog, his dog. Maggie and Negan the last two on the ground, Negan climbs up then Maggie, but her leg is grabbed by a walker as Negan watches her struggle, Maggie calls out to him for help. But Negan leaves her.
Meanwhile… Ezekiel, Eugene, Yumiko, and Princess are taken hostage by wannabe storm troopers. Where they are all audited by the Commonwealth. They are asked the same questions for hours about their life before the fall to where their current settlement is. Ezekiel asserts himself calling out the red stormtrooper, who’s in charge before coughing due to his throat cancer.
In their cell they talk about how they can escape, but Eugene thinks they should see this as an opportunity to get the help Alexandria needs, but really Eugene just wants to meet his mysterious radio girl. But quickly changes his mind once they find out how long some of the people have been in cages.
Because of Princess’s people watching skill, they are able to steal a couple stormtrooper suits, and escape. But they come across a wall of pictures of people where Princess finds a note to Yumiko. This caused her to want to stay.
What I would’ve liked to have seen in this episode
I would’ve liked to have seen Negan be the bigger man and help Maggie rather than leave her for dead.
What I want to see in the final season of The Walking Dead
Negan fully redeemed himself in the end. He’s come a long way to just throw all this away because of Maggie. Also, I would like to see Maggie forgive Negan so she can move on herself. And I know this is a long shot but Rick and Michonne showing up in the end to be reunited with Judith and RJ.
